John McLaughlin
is one of the world's most accomplished guitarists on both acoustic and
electric. There are very few albums of his that are not worth hearing.
Pictured is the legendary album (live) of the acoustic trio featuring Al Dimeola
and Paco DeLucia. It is a breathtaking meeting of the minds (and hands) of
3 virtuosos.
Also of note (and my favorites of his work) are the early Mahavishnu Orchestra albums featuring Jan Hammer (one-hand synthesizer riffs) and Billy Cobham (pounding drums). The best is, I daresay, utterly unavailble. It was a late 60's/early 70's concert bootleg.
McLaughlin later used a similar in-your-face guitar style as a sideman on a series of albums by Miles Davis.
Mahavishnu Orchestra of that period was the progressive jazz-rock version of blues-rock pioneers Cream.
